King visits Saïdia
His Majesty King Mohammed VI visited the town Saïdia on 28 November 2006 to officially launch a series of projects aimed at upgrading urban and tourism infrastructure.
The projects will focus on the town of Saïdia, already a highly popular tourism destination for Moroccans, and will include the development of a modern and attractive beach promenade, restoration of the 19th century Kasbah, an enhanced water drainage system, and improvements to the road infrastructure that gives access to the resort.
Some 369 million DH (approximately 33 million euros) will be invested in upgrading Saïdia’s infrastructure as part of the Government's 'Vision 2010' plan to make it the location for one of the largest and most important beach resorts in the country – Mediterrania Saïdia.
The occasion was attended by senior officials from the Tourism, Environment, Town Planning and Local Government departments, and an agreement was signed for the projects to commence in January 2007.
More details:
The Sovereign chaired the ceremony of an agreement for the funding of several projects in Saïdia; the purification of the city centre of Saïdia and the tourist complex (20 million DH), the reforming the promenade of Saïdia (74 million DH) and the upgrade of the road infrastructure that gives access to the city (21 million DH). The signature of this agreement follows the speech given by the King on March 18th 2003 in Oujda, which stated the government's aims for the development of the Eastern Region and at the creation of a new tourist resort at Saïdia.
This event signifies the interest that the government is taking in the upgrade of Saïdia, considered as a tourist area par excellence because it will have one of the largest national sea resorts within the framework of "Vision 2010".
The purification project in the city centre of Saïdia and the tourist complex, will involve the construction of a waste water and rain water drainage network of 70 km in length, in addition to 5 pumping plants. The first phase of this project, which will benefit a population of 130.000 inhabitants, will require a budget of approximately 20 million DH. The financing of this project is assured by the National Office of Water and the group FADESA.
The road infrastructure upgrade project will involve As doubling the provincial road 6.000 (the south entrance of the city, over 2 km stretch) and the main road N 16 (at the northwest of the city, over a 3 km stretch).
This project, which will involve the investment of approximately 21 million DH, also foresees the creation of a new connection between the provincial road 6.000 and the loop road for a distance of 1,5 km. The works on this project will begin in mid-January and are estimated to last until July 2007.
The project to develop the promenade of Saïdia will involve the restoration of the Kasba, development of green spaces (creation of palm trees oasis), lampposts on the promenade and the provision of pavilions, showers, sporting areas etc.
The King also explained there would be a project to construct a drainage and canal system of 17km in length to protect the city of Saïdia and the new tourist resort against floods. This project will be carried out by the Ministry in charge of Water resources.
At an overall cost of 254 million DH, this project, with an approximate duration of 18 months, will be financed by the Fund of Hassan II for Economic and Social Development and the Ministry of Tourism, Crafts and Social Economy. The project will facilitate the access to the tourist resort of Saïdia, to attract more tourist investments and to strengthen the road links between Saïdia and Oujda.
In his arrival, the King greeted a detachment of the Royal Guard before being greeted by Karim Ghellab, Minister of Equipment and Transport, Adil Douiri, Minister of Tourism, Craft and Social Economy, Toufiq Hjira, Minister of State in charge of the Environment and the Town planning and Abbdelkébir Zahoud, Secretary of State for Water.
